In 2011, Pacific Blue Foundation worked to merge tradition and modern technology in an effort to develop sustainable practices that would benefit both the coral reef ecosystem and the local communities that depend on it.
Fiji’s seafaring culture was commemorated once again with the annual historic boat race, Veitau Waqa, The Boat Lives. The event drew local interest and emphasized the important role that ancient Fijian craftsmanship and sailing has on Fijian culture.
In addition, Pacific Blue Foundation continued to promote awareness by funding the Fiji Locally Managed Marine Areas (FLMMA) workshop on Yanuca.
The highlight of this year was on Ocean’s Day, when Roko Sau, the high chief of Totoya, declared the Sacred Reef in Totoya a Marine Protected Area (MPA). The declaration was not only recognized by Totoya villagers, but celebrated by the locals as well. The MPA reminded Fijians of the “tabu” (or non-fishing area) established by ancient kings in order to replenish fishing waters. Pacific Blue Foundation looks to Fijian traditions such as these to help further conservation efforts and benefit the small island communities.
